Naručitelji i javna arhitektura mletačke Dalmacije u ranomoderno doba / Patrons and Public Architecture in Venetian Dalmatia in the Early Modern Era

The presentation reexamines the prevailing thesis in scholarly literature that the Venetian Republic, through its officials, was the primary driving force behind the construction and design of public buildings in cities along the Adriatic coast that came under its rule in 1420. Through an analysis of specific examples of the construction and renovation of public buildings, it explores the potential mechanisms of action by Venetian officials as well as the role of the local population. The aim of the presentation is to shed light on the challenges of researching, identifying, and evaluating patrons in the process of shaping and constructing public spaces in Eastern Adriatic cities, with a particular emphasis on the significant yet often overlooked role of the local population in these processes.

Darka Bilić is a senior research associate at the Institute of Art History in Zagreb, Croatia. Her research focuses on the history of early modern architecture along the eastern Adriatic coast, framed within a broader geographical and cultural context, with a particular interest in the role of the Venetian Republic in shaping the built environment. She participated in the 2014–2015 research seminar "From Riverbed to Seashore: Art on the Move in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean," organized as part of the Getty Foundation’s ''Connecting Art Histories'' initiative. In 2016, she was an Associate of the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at Harvard University, and in 2018, she was a Berenson Fellow at the Center for Renaissance Studies at Villa I Tatti, Harvard University. Currently, she is coordinating the research project "From Local to Regional: The Art of Adriatic Croatia from the Middle Ages to the 19th Century" at the Institute of Art History, funded by the European Uonion’s NextGenerationEU program. She also teaches at the Department of Art History at the University of Split.
